A situational setup
It is the Lautaret Garden, a facility of the University of Grenoble Alpes located just above the pass of the same name, that brought the participants together in its research-dedicated facilities, which are also open to the public.
To start these meetings, it was from the Lautaret Pass, under the late afternoon sun, that Xavier Bodin (USMB), an expert on rock glaciers and associated risks, involved in monitoring the Laurichard site for over 20 years and co-author, with Sandrine Caroly, of a hiking guide on rock glaciers (to be published this summer), led the group along the trails to the foot of this giant. The Laurichard glacier is equipped with scientific research instruments that monitor its movements and analyze its behavior, which is affected by climate change. From this vantage point, the group was also able to familiarize themselves with the geography of the area and better understand the hazards and challenges faced a little further down by the busy departmental road connecting Bourg d’Oisans and Briançon, nestled among the towering peaks overlooking the Guisane: flash floods, avalanches, snowdrifts… It was Marie Pierre Michaud from ONF-RTM who, on site, described the daily challenges faced by public officials to ensure the road remains passable year-round.
A progress update on the ongoing work
Half a day was then dedicated to ongoing work, with a review of the results achieved: involvement of nearly 70 staff members including the start of 11 PhDs and 4 post-docs, 17 scientific publications, and nearly 3.5 million euros in secured co-funding. Thirteen young researchers from the Risks and Mountains theme presented their work during a morning packed with diverse topics ranging from the measurement, documentation, and monitoring of hazards and risks in the mountains to the implications for territorial governance, including advanced physical and statistical modeling and the impacts of climate change, allowing for a rich exchange of issues and methodologies developed by each.

Two scientific co-construction workshops
Two half-days were dedicated to small group workshops to collectively reflect on issues related to mountain risks. The first session, focused on decision support, began with brief presentations from specialists in operational risk management: Robin Mainieri (ONF-RTM) on the Bérarde crisis, Diana Salazar (Plan International NGO) from Peru sharing her experiences with flood crises in South America, Marie-Pierre Michaud (ONF/RTM) on multi-risk management of the Lautaret road, and Julie Duchalais (Briançonnais Community of Communes) discussing Territorial Strategies for Risk Prevention in the Mountains of her area. The workshops were then facilitated by Sandrine Caroly (Pacte), Guillaume Chambon (IGE), and Florie Giacona (IGE).
The final morning was dedicated to a workshop focused on the potential contributions of AI to the study of mountain risks, led by Nicolas Eckert (IGE), Filippo Masi (LJK), Arthur Bayle (IGE), and Clara Levy (BRGM). This group work aims to eventually expand into the joint development of a scientific article on this topic, co-authored by the participants.
The magnificent setting of the Jardin du Lautaret, with its first flowers at the start of its seasonal opening to the public, and the kindness of its staff greatly contributed to the success of this event, from which everyone left with a better understanding of the field, their peers, the challenges faced by local stakeholders, and with the prospect of continuing the collaborative work within the IRIMONT project.
