Rising sea levels and the increasing intensity and frequency of storms are impacting our coastlines, with consequences for infrastructure, local economies and citizens’ lives. A detailed understanding of these phenomena and their effects on the coastline is necessary in order to better anticipate them and adapt.
These issues were at the heart of the round table “Coasts at Risk: Better Anticipation, Better Adaptation. Key Tools”, moderated by Raphaël Sart (CNES) at the Salon des Maires, with Gilles Grandjean, Director of the Natural Risks and Territorial Resilience Program at BRGM and co-director of the program under the France 2030 plan; Aude Witten, expert at the Adour-Garonne Water Agency; Aurélie Dehouck, expert at i-SEA; and Karim Selouane, expert at Resallience.
The IRICOT project within the PEPR Risks is specifically dedicated to coastal risks and targets three areas: anticipation, crisis management and coastal resilience. It aims to:
• Shed light on knowledge and lessons from the past in these fields;
• Improve understanding of extreme events by building an original database based on measurements of dune, beach and cliff erosion during major storm events;
• Improve hazard forecasting at seasonal to decadal scales;
• Provide a fresh perspective on adaptation strategies in the face of risks, by focusing on the impact of multiple coastal risks on well-being, on protection from an economic standpoint, and on the necessary transformation of risk governance.
This round table was also an opportunity to discuss satellite technologies and data that can provide essential information to understand and anticipate changes along coastlines, as well as the challenges raised by the impacts of climate change in terms of spatial planning.
